Alexander M. Medina is of counsel to DLA Piper's Litigation practice, based in Sacramento.

Mr. Medina, a 2012 Northern California Super Lawyers "Rising Star," focuses his practice on civil litigation, white collar criminal defense, health care litigation, corporate internal investigations and advising clients on complex or novel questions of law. His civil litigation practice includes representing businesses, individuals and public entities at the federal, state and appellate levels in the Sacramento region and throughout California, often in high-stakes, high-profile situations.

Mr. Medina's civil litigation experience includes contract, commercial, fraud, real estate, tribal gaming, Indian law, health care, product liability, premises liability, public policy and constitutional cases. His criminal practice includes representing and advising individual and entity clients with respect to active or potential criminal, quasi-criminal, governmental, regulatory or internal investigations.

He has further experience in seeking and obtaining civil writs of mandate against public officials and entities and in representing property managers in investigations relating to potential misconduct in the course of their management. He also works in the litigation and analysis of health care providers' reimbursement by county governments for the cost of emergency services provided to a county's indigent population.

Mr. Medina is also very active on the pro bono front, having taken on numerous pro bono matters in diverse areas of the law (such as prisoner civil rights claims, national disaster relief, juvenile records sealing and veterans' rights). Since 2006, in conjunction with the judges and staff of the Eastern District of California, the Sacramento Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and the UC Davis School of Law, he also has been instrumental in providing educational programs to lawyers serving on the Eastern District's pro bono panel. In December 2011, he helped organize and was a panel speaker at an all-day intensive pro bono training seminar on prisoner civil rights claims held at the UC Davis School of Law. He was one of the firm's national pro bono award nominees and a pro bono award winner for the firm’s Sacramento office for 2011.

Before re-joining DLA Piper in May 2011, Mr. Medina practiced civil and criminal litigation with the Sacramento boutique litigation firm Stevens, O'Connell & Jacobs LLP. Earlier in his career, he practiced civil litigation at prominent national firms in Los Angeles and in Sacramento, including with DLA Piper.
