Charles P. Scheeler principally engages in a commercial litigation, internal investigation and white collar criminal defense practice. His trial experience includes over 25 jury trials and dozens of bench trials and arbitrations. Mr. Scheeler successfully litigated the dismissal of a $650 million consumer class action against a leading hospitality company, and recently argued the case on appeal. Mr. Scheeler also served as lead counsel to Senator George J. Mitchell in connection with his independent investigation of performance enhancing substance use in Major League Baseball. Mr. Scheeler served as lead outside counsel to MCI WorldCom in obtaining a declination of criminal charges by the US Department of Justice and a dismissal of criminal charges filed by the Oklahoma Attorney General arising out of the accounting irregularities announced by MCI WorldCom in 2002.
Mr. Scheeler is a Certified Public Accountant and has handled disputes involving accounting and financial matters. Since 1991, Mr. Scheeler has served on the Board of Directors of Rosedale Federal Savings and Loan Association, a mutually owned financial institution with assets of over $600 million. He is the Chairman of the Board of CollegeBound Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing college access to Baltimore City public school students. Mr. Scheeler also serves on the Board of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Mr. Scheeler has lectured on topics including the use of experts in fraud and commercial litigation cases, corporate internal investigations, environmental criminal law, and federal trial practice. The respected English research firm Chambers & Partners cites him in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. In 2009, the Ethisphere Council named him to its list of 2009 Attorneys Who Matter, described by the Council as "the best and brightest in the legal field" who exemplify "the best public service, legal community engagement and academic involvement" and "help lead their companies to the top of the ethics and compliance world."
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Scheeler was federal prosecutor in the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland from 1984 to 1989. There, his experience included successfully prosecuting racketeering, narcotics, money laundering, and fraud cases.
