“Corporate criminal law occupies an ever-increasing space in the day-to-day functioning of businesses. DLA Piper has advised very successfully in this area for years.”
– Carsten Grau, Partner Litigation and Regulatory, Hamburg
DLA Piper’s Corporate Defence team presides over a wealth of comprehensive experience in white collar and tax defence. For years we have advised clients – both businesses and individuals – from the broadest of divisions.
As a full-service legal services provider, we advise pre-emptively and throughout all stages of criminal and monetary penalty proceedings.
We offer an effective Early Warning System, by which we can influence – also on a European level through our Brussels office – new legislation with the help of our Government Relations team and follow latest developments to keep you up to date with important new information.
In conjunction with our colleagues in the Tax Law sector, we guide our clients through all important decision-making processes involved in criminal investigations.
The spectrum of our advisory activity stretches from advising on individual legal queries to giving
comprehensive and professional legal support for the entire duration of a criminal procedure.
Risk evaluation
We analyse the legal risks for your company in advance and sharpen your risk awareness.
Compliance
We develop individually tailored Compliance Programmes which ensure your company conforms to applicable laws and other norms – even EU and US regulations.
Protecting your company
We protect your company by implementing risk management systems and company guidelines, as well as training your employees accordingly, for example in line with the code of practice in the case of company searches, how to deal with public clients, etc.
Crisis management – “Rapid Response”
We provide support in acute regulatory crises, for example in the event of company searches, or so-called dawn raids, or in the case of a decision of whether to turn oneself in, in the event of a European or international arrest warrant. We are there for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Our corporate defence advice mainly covers the following areas:
- Representation before German authorities and courts.
- Representation before authorities and courts at EU level and before international institution.s
- Carrying out of internal investigations on the basis of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (US-FCPA), as well as US stock exchange supervisory authority (SEC) procedures and those of the US Justice Ministry for corruption charges (DOJ).
- Government Relations – monitoring of legislation on a national, European and international level.
We advise on all issues concerning the following groups (amongst others) of criminal corporate legal offences:
- Corruption
- Anti-money laundering
- Breach of trust
- Fraud cases
- Tax evasion
- Insolvency crime
- Offences under the Companies Act (AktG), Limited Liability Company Law (GmbHG), the German Commercial Code (HGB) and Accounting Regulations Law (RechnungslegungsG

Owing to increasing internationalisation and the interplay of world markets, international aspects of corporate defence play an ever-increasing role.
We explain potentially unconsidered risks involved in international business dealings and support you in effectively protecting your company’s integrity.
Of course, we also advise our German clients on white collar and tax defence that fall under other jurisdictions. In this case we draw on experienced local colleagues.
