The legal system  |  Practice areas

Chibesakunda & Co is part of the DLA Piper Group and is based in Lusaka, providing an extensive range of legal services through various practice areas.

We recognised that there was a need for our local corporate and commercial practice to be part of a global network, able to serve the needs of local and multinational investors within and outside Zambia. Joining the DLA Piper Group has enabled us to achieve this and enhance our service offering.

As one of Zambia’s largest law firms, we are well established and highly respected among our peers. We have significant experience across the legal spectrum, having acted for a variety of clients in many of Zambia’s most significant transactions. Close client contact combined with our relationship with DLA Piper has enabled us to handle wide-ranging matters for government, public and private enterprise.

We are familiar with the legal aspects that inform the Zambian economy, (including banking, capital markets, corporate finance and employment) and this knowledge positions us well to meet your diverse needs. We can help you achieve your commercial objectives in the most effective and most efficient way possible.

The legal system

The Zambian legal system is based closely on that of England and Wales, and Zambian courts widely apply principles of English Common Law.

Zambia’s judicial practice and procedure is governed by the Zambian High Court Act. However, where the Zambian provisions are deficient, the appropriate provisions of the Rules of the Supreme Court of England and Wales are applied.

While Zambia is not a signatory to any international conventions regarding the enforcement of foreign judgements, it is currently putting in place mechanisms for the ratification of the International Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.

Practice areas

The firm has a broad range of practice areas that include: mining, energy, telecoms, banking and finance, and infrastructure.
