The legal system  |  Practice areas

DLA Matouk Bassiouny is part of the DLA Piper Group. It is based in the Garden City area, in the heart of Cairo’s business district, which is very well known for its embassies and banks.

We are a two-partner firm with 20 fee earners providing an extensive range of legal services through various practice areas.

Our lawyers are experienced in the cultural and business practices of both local and international jurisdictions and are fully conversant in English, Arabic and French.

The legal system

The Egyptian legal system is based on a mixture of Napoleonic code, Islamic law and English Common Law. Many Western legal concepts were inapplicable to the Egyptian legal system so the Criminal Procedure Code of 1950 was introduced to provide basic guidance for conducting investigations and trial procedures.

Egypt accepts the compulsory jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice with reservations. Judicial review is by the Supreme Court and Council of State, which oversees the validity of administrative decisions. Egypt is a signatory to the 1958 Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.

Practice areas

The firm has a broad range of practice areas that include: aviation, banking and finance, corporate, privatisation and commercial, dispute resolution, employment, energy and infrastructure, intellectual property and tourism.
