Paul Hopman trained as lawyer specialising in Dutch civil law from 1990 to 1994 and obtained the equivalent of a Masters degree in Law. At the beginning of 2000 Paul joined DLA Piper Nederland. Primarily, he was engaged in the Amsterdam office's national Litigation practice. For three years Paul and his team were exclusively involved in a variety of banking litigation related matters, focusing on resolution of disputes between financial institutions and their retail and wholesale customers. His client base predominantly includes banks and other financial institutions.
Paul also advises financial institutions on a broad range of topics, in particular on issues relating to consumer credit, savings and bank payments and settlements. He has provided advice to a number of financial institutions regarding the new compliance regime laid out in the Dutch Act on financial supervision (
Wet op het financieel toezicht), which came into effect on 1 January 2007. In this context, Paul and his team evaluated a wide range of financial products and developed new documentation in this field.
