Building your Career

Our people are at the very heart of our business; that's why we are committed to ensuring everyone has access to the learning, development and experiences they need to progress their careers with us.

Our approach is based on a mutual commitment between our people and the firm. We encourage our people to take responsibility for their career development needs, whilst providing them with the support they need to do this.

This extends to developing skills in areas beyond conventional business activities. We believe in living our core values and investing in our communities – by giving something back we are helping to shape a better future for them. Our people tell us that investing in the community has helped them develop professional skills and engage more fully with the wider environment.

Diversity and Inclusion

We promote a culture that is inclusive of all; where everyone has the opportunity to grow their career, and where pathways to success are transparent.

Fostering diversity, inclusion and equality allows us to hire the best talent, build the most effective teams, deliver the highest level of client service and be effective contributors to our local communities.

Learning and Development

Investment in the careers and reputations of our people is one of the core values underpinning everything we do. Our development programmes demonstrate the real commitment we make to all our people.

Our award-winning International Learning and Development Curriculum has been developed to support the increasing needs of our people as they look to further their careers, whilst supporting our clients; wherever they operate around the world. This includes a range of activities internationally, regionally and locally.

All employees have access to formal training courses – ranging from technical courses, business, systems and skills training, to continuing legal education. Our award-winning International Career Academies provide our lawyers and business support professionals with an opportunity to learn and enhance professional skills at key stages of their careers, whilst meeting colleagues from across the firm and growing their personal networks.

Coaching and mentoring are well-established forms of personal and professional development here at DLA Piper and we have a number of programmes to support the many varied requirements of our people.

Secondments

We are committed to providing our people with the opportunity to experience an international secondment. Secondments provide a huge number of benefits to our clients, our business and of course, to our people, and are critical to our success.

In recent years the number of our people moving internationally and into new and emerging markets has increased – proof of our ability not only to react to the ever-changing market and provide our clients with the right people, the right skills, wherever they operate around the world, but also our expanding global reach.

Living and working in a new location and experiencing a new culture with different ways of working provides fantastic career development opportunities. We believe our approach to secondments fosters a global mindset and supports knowledge-sharing – enabling our people to work collaboratively across borders.

We are embarking on the second year of our innovative International Secondment Exchange Programme, which provides six-month exchange opportunities to those looking to gain experience of working across borders alongside their peers.

We have a dedicated International Mobility team in place to support all secondments.
