Press Release

DLA Piper today announced three of its lawyers have been named to the 2009 Ethisphere Institute “Attorneys Who Matter” list, which recognizes leading legal professionals that have excelled in and made a significant contribution to the corporate compliance space.

The DLA Piper lawyers recognized are:
  • Earl Silbert, Washington, DC, Hall of Fame Best of the Best, white collar
  • Charles Scheeler, Baltimore, Top Gun, white collar
  • Sharie Brown, Washington, DC, FCPA

The research-based Ethisphere Institute is a leading international think-tank dedicated to the creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anti-corruption and sustainability. The 2009 Attorneys Who Matter represent the best and brightest in the legal field and includes attorneys in all areas of practice, from federal agencies to leading in-house counsel to the top ethics and compliance officers of major companies.

Ethisphere selected lawyers who have all risen to the top from a combination of their experience, peer or client endorsements and high-profile cases, as well as the number of those cases successfully litigated. They are also the lawyers with the best public service, legal community engagement and academic involvement. This is the first time the annual award recognizes individual lawyers, instead of the companies they work for or represent.

Earl Silbert concentrates on white collar crime investigations and trials, civil and criminal tax, securities, defense procurement, environment, health care, and representation of lawyers and law firms on ethical, malpractice, and partnership issues. Of note, he served with two colleagues as the first Watergate prosecutor from 1972-1973. From 1974-1979, he was the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. He has served on the faculty of numerous American Bar Association and other continuing legal education programs, and has written extensively in the areas of white collar crime, the attorney-client privilege, work product doctrine for corporations and their employees, RICO, and other litigation issues.

He was one of just five lawyers listed on this year’s Attorneys Who Matter listing as a “Hall Of Fame” designee.

Charles Scheeler principally engages in a commercial litigation, internal investigation, and white collar criminal defense practice. His trial experience includes over 25 jury trials and dozens of bench trials and arbitrations. He served as lead counsel to Senator George J. Mitchell in connection with his independent investigation of performance enhancing substance use in Major League Baseball and also served as lead outside counsel to MCI WorldCom in 2002.

Sharie Brown chairs the firm’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) group and represents multinational corporations and conducts internal investigations, audits and M & A due diligence worldwide in the areas of the FCPA, OFAC compliance and export controls, corporate ethics and compliance, World Bank procurement frauds, and other financial crimes. She was a federal prosecutor before joining Mobil Oil Corporation as senior counsel, where she also served as the company’s ethics and compliance officer.
