Will .MOBI Be the Next .COM?

by Allyn Taylor

Backed by the most prominent mobile and Internet companies, “dotmobi” is the first top-level domain (TLD) dedicated to delivering the Internet to mobile phones and other portable handsets. Created to resolve issues which accompany the viewing of web sites from portable handsets, dotmobi promises increased public access in a world where four mobile phones are purchased for every one personal computer and the wireless handset market is predicted to exceed $136 billion.

While members of the general public can register on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 28, 2006, recognized trademark holders can submit applications for their registered trademarks as dotmobi domain names during the Trademark Sunrise Registration period: June 12 through August 21, 2006. To qualify, five items must be provided to an approved registrar:

  1. Trademark name of 3 to 65 ASCII characters
  2. Trademark registration number
  3. Date of trademark application, which must be before July 11, 2005
  4. Date of granting of trademark registration, which must precede the dotmobi domain name application date
  5. Country of trademark registration

Once registered, dotmobi home pages must conform to the dotmobi “Switch On!” style guides, which are designed to give the public effective access to a web site from portable handheld devices.

For more information on dotmobi registration see the official website at www.mtld.mobi or contact Allyn Taylor (650.833.2170), Heather Dunn (415.836.2557), Mark Feldman (312.368.7084), or Ann Ford (202.861.3920).
