The legal system

Being part of the Commonwealth, Tanzania’s legal system is premised on the English legal system. It is worth noting, however, that aside from sharing the Court of Appeal of the United Republic with Mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar maintains its own distinct and separate legal system.
The Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania declares Tanzania's aim to build a democratic society founded on the principles of freedom, justice, fraternity and concord. The Executive is accountable to a legislature composed of elected members and representatives of the people, and to an independent judiciary that dispenses justice without fear or favour. Human rights are preserved and protected in Tanzania.

Article 4 of the Constitution provides for three organs of Government - Parliament, the Executive and the Judiciary. These are established under Chapters Three, Two and Five respectively of the Constitution.

The Constitution also provides for the legislative supremacy of Parliament and the independence of the Judiciary. It embraces the principles of the Rule of Law, the separation of powers and a pluralistic political system.
