Geert Van Calster joined DLA Piper in 2000 and acts as counsel in the Brussels office. He is currently also a professor of law at the K.U. Leuven, a visiting lecturer at Oxford University, and a visiting professor of law at Monash University (Melbourne). He teaches regulatory and trade law in a variety of graduate programmes across Europe and co-directs Leuven University’s Master of Energy and Environmental Law.

His practice focuses on EC economic law, including competition law, EC environmental law, and international trade law. He is cited in the Legal 500 as being “well regarded for the interface between economic and regulatory law”, and as having an “excellent academic background aligned to pragmatic experience in both public and private sectors.”

His expertise covers international trade law; EC environmental law and EC economic law; and international environmental law, subjects on which he publishes and speaks extensively. He advises clients on topics such as European waste law, nanotechnology regulations, and chemicals' policy (including REACH). He has also been involved in a number of anti-dumping, State Aid, and Internal Market cases, as well as issues of international trade law (WTO: GATT, TBT, SPS, SCM).

Prof. Dr. Van Calster represents clients before the European Commission, and in national and the European courts.

Geert Van Calster has specific expertise in the following fields:

  • European regulatory law (especially environmental law): REACH, food and feed, pharmaceuticals, waste, nanotechnology
  • European economic law: free movement, State Aid, competition law
  • International trade law (Law of the World Trade Organisation): anti-dumping, subsidies, free movement of goods and services
