George B. South III is a partner in DLA Piper's Restructuring group, based in New York.

Mr. South's practice includes both in- and out-of-court restructurings and the rehabilitation of financially distressed businesses and municipalities. He represents distressed companies, creditors' committees, bondholders' committees, bond insurers, debtor-in-possession lenders and hedge and equity funs seeking to invest in and/or acquire the assets and businesses of financially troubled companies. Mr. South has represented parties in numerous chapter 11 cases, out-of-court restructurings and chapter 9 municipal bankruptcies.

Recently he has represented:

  • Hingham Campus, LLC and Linden Ponds, Inc. in its chapter 11 reorganization
  • The Clare at Water Tower in its ongoing chapter 11 case
  • Syncora Guarantee Inc. in the recent chapter 9 case of Jefferson County, Alabama, the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history
  • A significant bond insurer in the financial distress of the City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, whose chapter 9 bankruptcy case (opposed by such bond insurer) was recently dismissed as invalid
  • Torch Offshore, Inc. in the successful sale of its assets under section 363 of the Bankruptcy Code
  • Deutsche Bank in the chapter 11 case of Adelphia Corporation
  • Significant bond insurers in the successful restructurings of Entergy New Orleans; Northwestern Corporation; and Allegheny Energy
  • Forstmann Little in the chapter 11 cases of XO Communications and McLeod USA
  • US Bank, as indenture trustee, in the chapter 11 cases of Levitz Home Furnishings and Bethlehem Steel
  • The official committee of unsecured creditors in the chapter 11 case of Recoton Corporation
  • The official committee of unsecured creditors in the chapter 11 case of ITC DeltaCom, Inc.

Mr. South is a contributing author of one of the leading bankruptcy treatises in the United States, Collier on Bankruptcy. In addition, he has participated as a speaker in numerous forums on a variety of issues including tax, energy and telecommunication issues in bankruptcy.

The 2011 edition of Legal 500 cites Mr. South, praising him as an "excellent new addition” to DLA Piper’s restructuring group in 2010. Martindale-Hubbell rates him AV, its highest available rating.

Before joining DLA Piper, Mr. South was a partner with King & Spalding in New York. He also previously was a partner with Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson in New York.
