The Carbon Reduction Commitment - going green could be a grind for the real estate industry

Few would disagree with the target set by the Climate Change Act 2008 of making an 80 per cent cut in UK greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. But disputes are likely to arise between the owners and occupiers of buildings about the operation of one of the means of achieving that target, the Carbon Reduction Commitment ("CRC"). Substantial businesses in most in most sectors (including retail chains, banks and major hotel operators) and other major organisations (including all central government departments) will need to gear up to deal with the CRC's administrative requirements. In addition, businesses and organisations of all sizes will need to be aware of its effects on obligations in commercial leases.
