Jan heads the German Intellectual Property and Technology group of DLA Piper. He has over ten years' experience advising IT companies and national and international businesses. His practice involves a combination of corporate, intellectual property and other legal issues specific to the technology sector. As part of this blend Jan has focused on complex technology transactions involving the exploitation, leveraging and transfer of IP rights with the focus on transformative technologies and their impact on corporate enterprises. Consistent with this specialisation, Jan's practice involves the representation of customers and providers in sophisticated sourcing and offshoring transactions including large-scale IT and BPO projects. Furthermore, Jan is extensively engaged in open source aspects on behalf of vendors and users as well as in data protection and related IT compliance issues. In addition, he played a major role in developing the industry expertise required for M&A projects in the technology sector.

Chambers Global ranks Jan as a partner who is said to "command an impressive practice which combines his impeccable knowledge of the law with the capacity to produce practical advice". JUVE ranks him as an often recommended lawyer, who is a "very knowledgeable and pleasant negotiating partner" who is very "structured and accurate". Legal 500 ranks Jan as “very responsive and competent” lawyer in the area of information technology and outsourcing.

Jan is a member of the German Association for Law and Informatics (DGRI e.V.), the International Technology Law Association (ITechLaw), der Working Group IT of the German Lawyers' Association (DAV IT) as well as the German-American Lawyers Association (DAJV). Furthermore, he is a member of the Munich and German Lawyers' Association.

Earlier in his career, Jan was the author of one of the first books on e-commerce transactions in Germany. He is co-editor of the standard compendium for specialist IT lawyers in Germany and has published a number of articles on technology-related topics.

He is a frequent speaker at national and international technology law conferences and he is a lecturer for IT law at the University of Oldenburg.
