|
Jeffrey B. Coopersmith, a former federal prosecutor, represents clients in white collar criminal matters and related civil, administrative and regulatory matters, as well as in complex commercial litigation and in connection with internal corporate investigations.
Mr. Coopersmith graduated first in his law school class, clerked for a federal appeals court judge and practiced law at a major Washington, DC firm and the US Department of Justice before joining DLA Piper in 2005 as a partner.
Since joining the firm, Mr. Coopersmith has represented corporate and individual clients in Seattle, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Dallas, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur and other cities in connection with enforcement proceedings and investigations involving the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission and other federal and state agencies in a wide variety of substantive areas including securities, tax, antitrust, banking, corruption, health care and food safety. Recently, Mr. Coopersmith represented the former CFO of Countrywide Financial Corporation in SEC litigation, where a few days before trial the SEC agreed not to pursue fraud claims alleged in its complaint. Mr. Coopersmith has also obtained the government's agreement not to pursue charges in several other high-profile matters.
Mr. Coopersmith joined DLA Piper after a distinguished prosecutorial career as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington. Serving as Deputy Supervisor of the Complex Crimes Unit, he was responsible for coordinating the office's corporate and securities fraud prosecution efforts. Mr. Coopersmith successfully tried to verdict as lead counsel a number of major criminal cases as a federal prosecutor, including one that the media called the largest securities fraud case in Washington state history up to that point. In 2003, Mr. Coopersmith was awarded the inaugural Thomas C. Wales Performance Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington.
Mr. Coopersmith was a law clerk for the Honorable R. Lanier Anderson III, on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
In 2010 and 2011, Mr. Coopersmith was named a Super Lawyer by Washington Law & Politics magazine and is also named in Best Lawyers in America.
Mr. Coopersmith is the Pro Bono Coordinator for the Seattle office.
