John heads DLA Piper's Scottish Technology, Media and Commercial team. He advises on technology, sourcing, intellectual property and procurement issues for financial institutions, government departments as well as public and private bodies. John is qualified in both Scotland and England and Wales.

Key experience:
  • Appointed as legal adviser to Glasgow 2014, the organising committee for the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow.
  • Advising Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in relation to the establishment of the Scottish Translational Medicine Research Institute, a £50m collaboration with the four Scottish Medical universities, NHS and Scottish Enterprise.
  • Advising financial institutions on IT and commercial contracts.
  • Advising government departments and agencies on major IT procurements including Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Northern Ireland office, Department of Finance and Personnel, Department of Health, Valuation and Lands Agency and the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
  • Advising major UK brewer on purchase of IT and commercial services.
  • Advising spin-outs from universities and industry, including Stingray Geophysical (QinetiQ plc) Sentient Medical Limited (University of Dundee), MTEM Limited (University of Edinburgh), STAR-Dundee (Heriot-Watt University).
  • Drafting and negotiating sponsorship and technology agreements on behalf of Celtic FC.
