Lee I. Miller is the Joint Chief Executive Officer of DLA Piper and a member of DLA Piper's Executive Committee and Global Board. For nearly 30 years, Mr. Miller has concentrated his practice in the area of commercial real estate law.
Building on DLA Piper's core values, Mr. Miller is highly involved in community service and philanthropy. In 2011, he was named to the Legal Service Corporation Board of Directors' Pro Bono Task Force, which aims to develop resources to assist low-income Americans facing foreclosure, domestic violence and other civil legal problems. He has also been a driving force behind DLA Piper's extensive pro bono and corporate social responsibility initiatives. In 2010 alone, DLA Piper lawyers in the US donated more than 136,000 hours of pro bono service to signature projects in the United States that address vexing social problems as well as several initiatives pursued around the world through New Perimeter, DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate.
Mr. Miller has been recognized numerous times for his accomplishments in community service. In 2012, he received Georgetown University's John Carroll Award, its highest alumni honor. The university hailed his leadership role at DLA Piper, his achievements in developing New Perimeter, his contributions to the university – which include serving on the Georgetown Law Board of Visitors, developing law scholarships, launching the school’s transnational law program, providing leadership for the Corporate Counsel Institute and leading fundraising efforts – and his extensive community involvement in Chicago.
In 2008, Mr. Miller received the Arthur Goldberg Social Justice Award, recognizing his leadership in advocating on behalf of some of Chicago's most vulnerable populations. Also in 2008, B'nai B'rith honored him with the Commitment to Justice Award. In 2007, he was one of five alumni of Georgetown University Law Center honored with its Paul R. Dean Award. Mr. Miller has also received the Judge Learned Hand Human Relations Award, acknowledging his leadership in the legal profession and his personal dedication to philanthropic and civic endeavors. In 2006, he received the Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award, created in remembrance of Judge Rifkind's exemplary life, professional preeminence and record of public service and commitment.
Mr. Miller is also devoted to advancing diversity and inclusion in the legal community. Under his leadership, in 2010 DLA Piper launched its Alternative Work Schedule program, adopting a set of best practices to guide a flexible work program to meet the life/work demands of the firm's diverse workforce and support DLA Piper's business strategy of attracting and retaining top-quality talent. The program stems from DLA Piper's involvement in the Project for Attorney Retention (PAR). Mr. Miller is one of the 12 members of PAR's Diversity and Flexibility Connection, an initiative bringing together prominent general counsels and law firm chairs who work to make the legal profession more inclusive for women and minority lawyers.
Mr. Miller is a President's Club Member of The Real Estate Roundtable, which joins together leaders of top real estate firms and trade associations to address national industry and economic policy issues. For the past several years, he has served as co-chair of NorthStar Conferences LLC, which offers leadership programs focused on topics including compensation structures, mergers and management. Mr. Miller has also lectured extensively before bar, trade and professional associations on a variety of topics.
Among the many recognitions Mr. Miller has received for his legal practice, he has been named among America's leading real estate lawyers by Chambers and Partners, a respected English research firm. For the past several years, Crain's Chicago Business has placed him on its annual listing of top figures in the Chicago business world, "Who's Who in Chicago Business."
