Matthew Iverson is an associate in the Litigation practice group. His practice focuses on assisting DLA Piper's banking and commercial clients in complex litigation, such as mortgage discrimination class actions, employment discrimination matters, intellectual property matters and securities fraud suits. Mr. Iverson assists DLA Piper's banking clients in responding to congressional inquiries and regulatory investigations, and he has successfully coordinated client responses to investigations by congressional committees, the Social Security Administration Inspector General, and the New York and Massachusetts Attorneys General.

Mr. Iverson also focuses on complex land-use litigation and in that capacity assists clients in construction, zoning and environmental disputes with commercial and governmental agencies. He has successfully advocated for clients before state and local regulatory and planning agencies, including the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Martha's Vineyard Commission.

Mr. Iverson has represented clients before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Court of Appeals and federal and state trial courts.

Mr. Iverson manages DLA Piper's Education Rights Project, a signature pro bono project that assists low-income disabled children in gaining access to special education services. He has represented clients in special education disputes with school districts before the Massachusetts Bureau of Special Education Appeals and in federal court.

Before joining DLA Piper Mr. Iverson served as an Assistant District Attorney with the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office, a law clerk to the Honorable Judith A. Cowin of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and an officer in the United States Army.

Banking

  • Coordination of a national bank's response to multiple investigations of practices within the student lending industry by congressional committees, state attorneys general and Department of Education
  • Representation of a national bank in defense of a mortgage discrimination class action alleging that the bank's broker arrangements created a disparate impact on minorities
  • Representation of a national bank before the Social Security Administration Inspector General in response to an inquiry concerning garnishment of social security payments

Land Use

  • Representation of an industrial property owner in a development dispute concerning the project site's restrictive covenants
  • Representation of a property owner, in state court and before the Martha's Vineyard Commission, in a dispute with abutters and town authorities over the town's decision to revoke the building permit for a partially completed project
  • Defense of a property owner's special permit against a suit by abutters challenging the project's alleged impact on surrounding ground waters

Intellectual Property

  • Representation of leading distributor of branded diamonds and jewelry in trademark infringement action
  • Representation of significant online retailer in trademark and copyright matters, offensively and defensively

Other

  • Defense of a national computer products manufacturer in a federal employment discrimination action
  • Representation of a state transit authority in a dispute concerning an allegation that subway construction had damaged a nearby building
  • Defense of a condominium board against suits brought by owners dissatisfied with the board's policies and business decisions
