Mitka Baker's practice covers a broad spectrum of product liability, antitrust and white collar litigation. Ms. Baker has conducted negotiations, settlement discussions, and hearings during her representation of car manufacturers and dealers in warranty and consumer protection act cases. She previously represented a "Big Three" tobacco company in numerous individual smoker cases pending in state court.
Ms. Baker represents clients in a number of white collar and antitrust matters. Ms. Baker has prepared numerous motions challenging the validity of grand jury subpoenas and search warrants, and has argued a motion before the Fourth Circuit in connection with a grand jury matter. She conducts internal investigations and transactional due diligence for clients relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). She is also represents a foreign air carrier in class actions alleging global price-fixing conspiracies in the air cargo and passenger industries.
Ms. Baker is also actively involved in pro bono service. She has represented defendants in both state and federal cases. She is also involved with New Perimeter, DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate dedicated to pro bono work of global significance. As part of New Perimeter, Ms. Baker has taught a two-week class on corporate crime at the Addis Ababa Law School in Ethiopia, as well as a two-day prosecutor’s training workshop in Guyana.
In 2004-2005, Ms. Baker clerked for Chief Judge James R. Spencer in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. During that time, she assisted with both the civil and criminal docket, including criminal habeas corpus petitions.
Ms. Baker was named to the 2008 class of Legal Bisnow's 30 Under 30, a listing of exceptional young legal talent in the Washington, DC region.
