Jared Genser represents both national and international clients before Congress and the executive branch and counsels them on a variety of issues such as foreign affairs, appropriations, and international dispute resolution.
In 2006, Mr. Genser led a team of DLA Piper lawyers commissioned by former Czech Republic President Václav Havel, former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel to produce the report Failure to Protect: A Call for the UN Security Council to Act in North Korea. In 2005, Mr. Genser led a team who were commissioned by President Havel and Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town Desmond Tutu to produce the report A Threat to the Peace: A Call for the UN Security Council to Act in Burma. Since that report's release, the situation in Burma was formally voted onto the Security Council agenda and has been discussed numerous times in the Security Council. Independently, Mr. Genser is also president of Freedom Now, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization which seeks to free prisoners of conscience around the world through legal, political, and public relations advocacy efforts.
Mr. Genser taught "The UN Security Council in the 21st Century: Operations, Impact, and Reform," at the University of Michigan Law School in Winter 2008, and will be teaching the same class in Winter 2009 at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Previously, Mr. Genser was a non-residential Visiting Fellow with the National Endowment for Democracy in 2006-2007. He is the recipient of the ABA's John Minor Wisdom Award for Public Service and Professionalism, the Pro Bono Solicitor of the Year (UK Law Society), and is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Genser was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, the global strategic consulting firm. In addition, he formerly served as an assistant to the Political Advisor to the Mayor of Jerusalem, Israel.
