Register your vanity URL on Facebook

Mark I. Feldman

Two weeks ago we reported on Facebook's new registration procedure to block other Facebook users from adopting a vanity Facebook URL that incorporates your trademarks.

Now, Facebook has announced that if you took advantage of that procedure you can register your own vanity URL, provided you already have a Facebook page.

This is a process you can do directly with Facebook. In order to complete the registration, you are required to login to your Facebook account and provide your current Facebook URL as well as your requested vanity URL and the corresponding Trademark Registration Number. You will need to follow this link.

Facebook says it cannot guarantee your request will be granted due to several factors, such as multiple parties claiming rights to the same marks. Facebook also says that if you are not interested in requesting a vanity Facebook URL for your blocked trademark(s), it may be possible for another entity to request that URL if the other entity also claims rights to the same name.

While some businesses view Facebook pages as being a valuable marketing tool, you should consider the legal implications of having a page on the internet where third parties can make postings.

Finally, please note that if you did not block your trademarks prior to the June 13 deadline and were not a member of Facebook before June 9, then you will not be able to claim a vanity URL on Facebook until Sunday, June 28, 2009. On that day, you may go to this page to become a Facebook member and to register your vanity URL.

If you have any questions, please contact Mark Feldman or Gina Durham, or you can visit Facebook's Help Center.
