Peter is experienced in all aspects of litigation and international arbitration, with particular emphasis on insurance and reinsurance. On the marine side this covers shipping and marine insurance, including cargo claims, salvage and general average, charterparties, multi modal transport, hull and cargo insurance and reinsurance policy advice, off-shore construction, and shipbuilding contractual advice and disputes. On the non-marine insurance side, this covers experience in property and casualty insurance (CAR, IAR etc) and financial lines (E&O and D&O etc).

Since moving to Thailand in January 2006, Peter has become increasingly involved in assisting the insurance industry in all aspects of their business, including corporate, regulatory, compliance, employment, etc and now leads a team of lawyers within the Bangkok office who specialise in insurance-related matters. Peter is also a member of the DLA Piper's global steering committee on insurance.

Peter has been involved in various other aspects of litigation, including banking, personal injury, shareholder disputes and defamation. He has substantial experience of English, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thai arbitration procedure and is particularly experienced with LMAA arbitrations.

He is described in Chambers & Partners Directory of the Legal Professional 1995-1996 as a leading individual in Shipping and Maritime Law in London; in Chambers Global, The World’s Leading Lawyers 2000-2001, as a leading individual in shipping in Hong Kong; a recommended lawyer in Legal Experts 2000, and a leading individual in shipping in Singapore in Asia Pacific Legal 500 for the past three years. Peter appears in the 2006 Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers for Thailand and Singapore. He has recently been acknowledged in the Who's Who Legal Shipping & Maritime 2008 directory.

Peter has worked extensively for Far Eastern clients, based in Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand, and in particular has over the past 25 years established a substantial Korean client based practice.

He has written papers and delivered talks at seminars on a wide variety of topics in the UK, Korea, Canada, the USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, and is regularly invited by BIMCO to be a guest speaker at seminars in Singapore and Jakarta on various shipping-related issues.

He is a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the regional panel of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, a panel member of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration and a panel member of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.

Key experience:
  • Acted for a Malaysian shipyard in a dispute with the Government of Pakistan relating to the building of a power project; this included enforcement proceedings against the Government of Pakistan, an anti-suit injunction (which was subject to an English Court of Appeal decision in November 2002), and ICC arbitration proceedings.
  • Acted for Munich Reinsurance in relation to a US$180m claim arising from damage to an industrial plant due to an earthquake in Indonesia.
  • Acted for owners and insurers of the "HYUNDAI 105" which sank following a collision in the Singapore Straits in June 2004, with the loss of 4,191 cars, including dealing with wreck removal issues.
  • Acted for Hong Kong Telecom (now PCCW-HKT) in the Judicial Inquiry into the opening of Chek Lap Kok Airport, Hong Kong.
  • Acted for an Austrian trader in a US$200m dispute with a Russian government entity over the sale and purchase of precious minerals and metals, involving overseeing court actions and arbitrations in six different countries, and being counsel of record in Moscow and Stockholm in relation to ICC arbitration hearings.
  • Acted for Korea Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in relation to the disputed delivery of six Probo type vessels to a Norwegian consortium, involving sums in dispute in excess of US$180m.
  • Acted for a major Korean construction company in a dispute with insurers under a CAR policy relating to the settlement of a new building in Singapore.
  • Acting for the Thai insurance market in relation to various hotel Tsunami claims.
  • Acted for the Thai Reinsurance market in relation to a US$40m claim arising from a fire at the catering premises of Thai Airways at the new Bangkok airport.
  • Acted for the Asian reinsurance market in relation to an explosion and fire at a power plant in Thailand.
