Raj N. Shah, Esq. is a partner in the litigation department of the Chicago office of DLA Piper. Mr. Shah's experience primarily relates to litigating large, complex disputes in areas such as class action defense, privacy, consumer protection, patent and trade secret liability, contract, fraud, corporate governance, accounting and professional services, and purchase price financial and valuation. He has practiced extensively before various federal and state courts across the country.
In June 2005, Mr. Shah was named the Illinois State Bar Association's Young Lawyer of the Year. Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm subsequently presented Mr. Shah with a certificate recognizing this award, and Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich honored him with a letter of tribute. The award also was covered in the national and international press, including, among many others, the Economic Times of India, Garavi Gujarat, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Lawyer, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Detroit News, India Abroad, IndUS Business Journal, India Tribune and India West. Mr. Shah also has been featured in the executive profile sections of the IndUs Business Journal and Biz India.
On October 26, 2005, Mr. Shah was awarded the international "Pride of India Gold Award" from the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Institute at an international gala in London, England. The NRI Institute is a prestigious international organization that encourages interactions between prominent nonresident Indians or persons of Indian origin who live outside India and those who reside in India. The Pride of India Gold Awards were given to only 16 outstanding nonresident Indians selected from across the globe for their significant contributions to the socioeconomic development of India and the Indian community in their adopted country. Mr. Shah was recognized for his significant accomplishments and contributions in the field of law. He was among the youngest recipients of the award.
In January and February 2006, Mr. Shah was interviewed by TV Asia and Chitrahar TV about his legal accomplishments and his involvement in the Indian community.
In 2006, Mr. Shah was selected by firm management to serve as an associate representative to the firmwide Policy Committee. He also was selected as an associate representative on the firmwide Compensation Committee. Previously, Mr. Shah was selected by his peers to serve a term on the Associates' Committee and sat by designation by firm management on the Board of Advisors of the Marbury Institute-the firm's professionalism program. Mr. Shah is a member of the Pro Bono Committee for the Chicago office. DLA Piper awarded the 2003 Pro Bono Associate of the Year award to Mr. Shah in recognition of his contributions to the community and civil rights.
Mr. Shah is active in diversity issues relating to recruiting, retention, and promotion of minority associates. His personal cause is the fight against breast cancer.

Defense of a medical device manufacturer in a multimillion-dollar patent infringement suit brought in the US District Court, Northern District of Illinois.

Representation of healthcare division of large commercial finance company in dispute concerning trade secrets and non-compete agreements in Northern District of Illinois as part of multijurisdictional litigation.

Defense of a large national credit bureau in numerous class actions across the country for claims of violation of federal statutes, consumer protection statutes, and state privacy common law and, separately, in an action for damages in excess of $150,000,000 for alleged corporate fraud and breach of contract.

Defense of a subsidiary of a NYSE company in the District of Massachusetts in a $30 million breach of contact and fraud action and accounting matters regarding an over $90 million asset sale of five companies.
- Defense of a large east coast telecommunications company in a more than $8 million dollar conversion, unfair competition, and tortious interference claim in the Southern District of Indiana.
- Representation of a large film laboratory in a multimillion-dollar breach of contract action in an arbitration in Los Angeles, California, before the American Arbitration Association.

Defense of a financial services organization in a more than $20 million breach of contract and fraud action brought in Illinois state court.

Representation of a Fortune 500 Company defending against trade secret misappropriation, conspiracy, and tortious interference claims removed to the US District Court, Southern District of Iowa.

Representation of various accounting firms in professional liability and tax disputes and other related matters.

Representation of chemical manufacturer in evaluating and updating fire, safety, and heath protocols.

Regional coordinating counsel defending brake lathe and brake grinder manufacturer in product liability matters.

Pro bono representation of plaintiffs in a highly publicized nationwide civil rights action brought against a national restaurant chain. On behalf of more than 40 plaintiffs, among them the NAACP and various African American guests, the lawsuit alleged that the chain engaged in public accommodations discrimination in violation of Title II and 42 U.S.C. § 1981. This representation was recognized with an Outstanding Achievement Award in the area of Public Accommodations by the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, which termed the action "one of the finest examples of civil rights advocacy in the Committee's history." For this same representation, the General Counsel of the NAACP also wrote a special letter of gratitude.
