Our newly-employed, junior legal assistants take part in an international training program in London. The program is split over three years and will offer them the opportunity to get to know colleagues from different parts of the world.
DLA Piper rolls out international development programmes for lawyers at all levels and our experienced lawyers also take part in similar programmes abroad at regular intervals.
Our national training program, the DLA Piper School, involves a series of relevant technical seminars (one seminar per month). On the whole, we use our own internal staff as speakers but we also invite external professors and other academic experts.
We assist new employees who have not completed their legal course. Most of our employees find that it is relatively quick to work on the number of cases necessary in order to be granted a licence.
As a new employee you are allocated a sponsor who will take care of you and your interests when you first join us. Your sponsor will ensure that you get to know all the practical aspects involved in working in one of our offices and that you can easily find all the useful and current information that you will need. Your sponsor will also be a companion until you have found your feet socially.
DLA Piper has a well-established process for conducting performance appraisals. All of our countries use the same tool for carrying out this process. Two appraisals per year ensure that your personal development is on the agenda and that you know what is expected of you in your role.
You and the lawyer assigned to your career advancement will work together to set up a development plan for the coming year. This plan will be based on DLA Piper's strategy, your department’s marketing plans and your own career goals. This lawyer will also review your performance and give you advice on how you can further improve your good points, and focus on your areas for development
Skills, experience and performance are the crucial keywords you will hear on your way up the career ladder. We have no set career trajectory or timeframe - it is you who sets the speed of your development.
