Paul Hopman studied law, specialising in Dutch civil law, and obtained the equivalent of a masters degree in law. At the beginning of 2000, Paul joined DLA Piper Nederland. Primarily, he was engaged in Amsterdam's national litigation practice. Since 2005, Paul and his team have been predominantly involved in all kind of banking litigation related matters, focusing on resolution of disputes between financial institutions and their retail and wholesale customers.
Paul also advises financial institutions on a broad range of topics, in particular on issues relating to consumer credits, savings, bank payments and settlements as well as investment linked policies. On the finance side, over the last year and due to the global economic downturn, Paul's team has been involved in a number of material disputes with respect to pledges, mortgages, the termination of the banking relationship with clients, bank guarantees, contracts of security ship, unauthorised payments, disputes regarding penalty interest and legal costs, disputes regarding customer due diligence related to ongoing relationships and liability claims regarding alleged poor asset management or advice.
Paul and his team boast significant background knowledge of the financial markets. They have built up this knowledge over the past years on account of their direct involvement in a number of extensive compliance-related projects as well as their advice with respect to the desinvestments which were executed in the financial sector in a major retail sector merger on the full range of issues faced by the client. The latter seems to be appreciated as truly valuable.
