Peter White is a partner in DLA Piper's Corporate and Finance practice, based in New York.
Mr. White has over 20 years of experience in the professional sports business, representing various parties in commercial and financing transactions involving the world’s major sports leagues, including Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, the National Hockey League and the Barclays Premier League. Over the years, Mr. White has developed an expertise representing teams, owners, banks, investors and other parties in the financing of sports properties, including leagues, clubs, media interests, stadiums, arenas, concessions and related assets. In particular, he has been active in the financing of the development or redevelopment of stadiums and arenas for prominent teams such as MLB's Mets, Twins and Yankees, the NBA's Heat, Magic and Nets, the NFL’s Bills, Giants, Jets, Packers and Patriots, and the NHL's Sabres.
Among the recent transactions he has led, aggregating more than $5 billion, are the financing of a controlling interest in the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field and related assets for the Ricketts family; New Meadowlands Stadium for the New York Giants and New York Jets (Project Finance magazine's North American 2007 Leisure Deal of the Year); Barclays Arena for the Brooklyn Nets; Citifield for the New York Mets and the new Yankee Stadium for the New York Yankees (Bond Buyer's 2006 Deal of the Year); Target Field for the Minnesota Twins; and Amway Center for the Orlando Magic.
In addition to his sports finance practice, Mr. White has more than 25 years of experience in the project and public finance fields, with a focus on developing and financing large infrastructure projects. Over the years, Mr. White has worked as a project and public finance lawyer in many of the states in the US, including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and District of Columbia, on projects and matters in the education, energy, general government, health care, hospitality and leisure, housing, solid waste and waste to energy, transportation and water and sewer sectors. These projects have involved public-private partnerships, municipal spinoffs, federal guarantees and other innovative programs and techniques.
In 2007, American Lawyer named him a Dealmaker of the Year. He has been repeatedly recognized in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, which in 2009 noted that "clients stress that when working with White and his group, 'you know that every aspect of the transaction is going to be done well.'" and in 2011 said, "One industry source described him as 'the guru for stadium and arena financing.'" Chambers has also said that Mr. White "has a tremendous track record in the financing and development of stadia for both domestic and international sports leagues." Mr. White is also recognized as a New York Super Lawyer.
