Nathaniel Stinnett appointed to Massachusetts Zero Net Energy Buildings Task Force

Group to help public and private sectors design and construct green buildings

Informacja Prasowa

(Boston) – DLA Piper today announced that Nathaniel Stinnett, an associate in the firm’s Real Estate practice in Boston, has been appointed by Governor Patrick to the Massachusetts Zero Net Energy Buildings Task Force, a group formed to help the state’s public and private sectors design and create energy efficient “green” buildings.

Chaired by Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles, the Task Force will help Governor Patrick create a 2009 legislative package that will put the commercial and residential building sectors on a path toward broad marketability of zero net energy buildings by 2020, as well as the universal adoption of zero net energy practices for new construction by 2030. The first state-owned zero net energy building is expected to be built by January 1, 2010.

The Task Force consists of leaders from the real estate, energy, architecture, engineering and finance industries, as well as leaders from academia and municipal, state and federal government. They will examine and recommend solutions for a number of issues, including current challenges to owning a state-owned zero net energy building, measurable endpoints to include an interim “green” state building standard, and possible barriers to the adoption of a zero net energy standard for commercial and residential buildings.

“I am honored to be a part of such a groundbreaking project and working with such an impressive group of professionals,” said Stinnett. “This is a significant step in helping to alleviate the environmental strain and our work ahead is fundamental to the goal of making Massachusetts a leader in the field of energy efficient buildings and a principle creator of green employment opportunities.”

About Nathaniel Stinnett

Stinnett concentrates his practice in real estate development, acquisitions and affordable housing. He has represented state agencies and private clients in the development and financing of affordable housing projects. He also has experience working with regional and national owners and developers in a broad variety of commercial real estate transactions, including the representation of sellers, purchasers and developers of downtown office towers, retail properties and suburban office buildings.

He also serves on the Board of Directors for Oiste – The Massachusetts Latino Civic Education Initiative and he has been recognized by the Massachusetts Literacy Foundation for his leadership in the field of literacy education for homeless adults.

Stinnett received a J.D. from Boston College Law School, cum laude, and a M.A. in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory, with academic honors. He also received a B.A. in Music from Yale University.

About Zero Net Energy Buildings

Zero net energy buildings are a growing trend across the country. Although there are varying definitions, most people in the field consider a zero net energy building to be one where the energy produced on site is at least equal to the amount of energy consumed by the building. By employing aggressive use of energy efficiency and on-site renewable energy, these buildings meet most of their energy needs through efficiency measures and on-site renewable generation so that they increase neither energy demand nor greenhouse emissions. Zero net energy buildings also have the potential to lower costs for residences and businesses and stimulate clean energy technology development and job growth.
