Pro Bono Counsel
Renée Glover Chantler assists with DLA Piper’s national pro bono programs on the West Coast and oversees the operations of those programs in the firm’s office in Silicon Valley.
Ms. Chantler has practiced as a litigator for more than 15 years in private practice, including as an associate at Heller, Ehrman White & McAuliffe, and most recently as the principal of Chantler Law Offices, a solo practice focusing on civil law. Throughout her career she has been steadfastly committed to pro bono services and dedicated to practicing law that benefits low-income people.
She has extensive independent litigation experience in federal and state courts and ADR forums, on cases involving real estate, land use, business contracts, unfair competition, insurance, securities, intellectual property, employment, employment discrimination, predatory lending, unlawful foreclosure rescue, and family law.
Ms. Chantler’s most recent community law experience before coming to DLA Piper was with the Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) at Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto, where she was the supervising lawyer for the VAP program. In that capacity, she instructed, mentored, and supervised area law students responsible for client screening and legal triage and served as liaison to Bay Area law firms that provided pro bono assistance to the VAP Program.
Ms Chantler continues to litigate cases. Currently, she is working on Wogobo v. Yeganeh, a case involving a mortgage broker; she has been involved in that case since 1999.
From 1998 to 2001, Ms. Chantler was executive director of the East Palo Alto Community Law Project, while serving as an adjunct clinical professor at Stanford Law School. This project was the primary clinical legal education program of Stanford Law School (and the predecessor to Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto.) As the project’s director, Ms. Chantler managed a staff of six full-time attorneys plus staff while providing strategic, substantive legal guidance in many legal areas. With her colleagues, she also developed the clinical curriculum and taught a clinical seminar, and worked directly to teach and mentor Stanford Law School students participating in the Volunteer Attorney Program.
Ms. Chantler has also served as a public official—as a planning commissioner for the City of East Palo Alto (and vice chairperson of the commission from 1996 to 1998); and as chairperson of the city’s Rent Stabilization Board from 1983 to 1985.
In 2001, the Stanford Graduate Women’s Network honored her with its award for outstanding teaching.
