Roy heads DLA Piper's office in Shanghai and was responsible for its opening in October 2002. He is admitted to practice as a solicitor in England & Wales and Hong Kong. He joined DLA Piper in 1998 and has over 19 years' experience in handling corporate and regulatory matters for insurance companies and insurance and trade related contentious work, and representing multinational companies ("MNC") in investigations and compliance.

Roy also has considerable experience in insurance and commercial related disputes that involve litigation and arbitration in Hong Kong, China, the United States and Europe (in particular the United Kingdom). He has further experience in commercial matters involving mergers & acquisitions, the sale and purchase of ships, ship/asset financings and insurance contracts.

Since his major contribution in advising Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China in respect of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs' investments in 1992, which were the first foreign investments in a Chinese insurance company, Roy has assisted many major Chinese enterprises in relation to their investments and corporate matters in both China and overseas markets.

Roy is a regular member of several major industry committees of foreign chambers of commerce in Shanghai. He has been regularly invited by government authorities and the China Lawyers Association to speak at workshops and conferences focusing on business risk management for Chinese companies and multinational companies.

He was nominated as a leading lawyer in the Shipping practice area in China by Legal 500 (2009) and a leading lawyer in the Capital Markets / Corporate practice areas by Asia Law & Practice (2008). He is named an arbitrator of the Chinese European Arbitration Centre. In 2011, Roy has been nominated by in-house counsel and peers as one of the pre-eminent practitioners with expertise in M&A in China (The Guide to Leading Practitioners, 2011).

Roy is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.
