DLA Piper ranked among top securities litigation firms

Firm’s ranked second by Securities Law360

Press Release

DLA Piper US LLP ranked second nationally among the 100 most frequently hired securities litigation practices in the US in a list published yesterday in Securities Law360. The annual survey by Portfolio Media of New York ranks US law firms based on how frequently a firm was hired as defense counsel in new securities litigation cases filed in 2006. Rankings are based on securities fraud cases brought in federal courts in 2006, as reflected by US district court dockets.

"In addition to seeing the firm's securities litigation practice ranked among the leading law firms most often retained in securities cases filed in 2006, we also were successful in resolving a number of significant matters on behalf of clients in 2006," said Perrie Weiner, international co-chair of DLA Piper's Securities Litigation practice and a partner in the firm's Los Angeles-Century City office. "We attribute our success in part to our interdisciplinary approach in which our clients work with lawyers in areas including civil securities litigation, SEC enforcement, and white collar criminal work,” he added, noting that the group’s lawyers also strategize on potential problems and litigation, should it arise, from the outset.

"Our ranking is an objective indication that we have earned the support of clients who have retained us to assist in securities litigation matters throughout the US and internationally," added Robert Brownlie, international co-chair of DLA Piper's Securities Litigation practice and a partner in the firm's San Diego office.

In the US, DLA Piper's securities litigation practice group handled 26 new cases last year. Included in that caseload are more than 10 percent of all options backdating cases, according to Securities Law360. DLA Piper also has successfully represented companies and individual directors and officers in numerous class action securities fraud cases and has a substantial and nationally recognized hedge fund securities litigation practice.

DLA Piper has participated in landmark cases that have helped shape securities laws, including the first reported decision dismissing a case under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 (PSLRA) and the first federal appellate decision affirming the dismissal of an alleged accounting fraud case under the PSLRA. The firm's Securities Litigation practice also has successfully represented clients in SEC and matters before US Attorneys.
