Award
Press Release
DLA Piper is pleased to announce that Shale D. Stiller, partner in the firm’s Baltimore office, will be honored by the Bar Association of Baltimore City (BABC) as a leader in the Baltimore legal community. The eleven lawyers and judges selected as Baltimore City's “Living Legal Legends” will be recognized at the BABC’s first-ever awards ceremony on March 16, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor in Baltimore.
“We are pleased, but not surprised, that BABC has recognized Shale for his vast contributions to the practice of law and to the community in general,” said Paul Tiburzi, managing partner of DLA Piper’s Baltimore office. “Shale has been a fixture in Baltimore’s legal and civic communities for decades, and has served as a mentor to a generation of lawyers here at DLA Piper and across the country.”
Stiller was recognized for his long-standing commitment to the legal profession and significant contributions to the Baltimore community through his civic involvement. As one of Baltimore’s best known and most respected lawyers, he has a long track record of prominent legal work and commitment to the Baltimore non-profit and business community, as well as a keen dedication to inspiring others and enhancing the public’s knowledge of the law.
At DLA Piper, Stiller concentrates his practice on a broad range of business, tax and estate planning matters, and has also been chief counsel in major constitutional, commercial and divorce litigation. He previously served for five years as the president, CEO and chairman of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the world. Stiller was also chosen by incoming Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in January 2010 to serve as one of four chairs of her mayoral transition team.
Stiller has been an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law for nearly 50 consecutive years, where he has taught taxation, commercial law, constitutional law and federal jurisdiction. For more than 25 years, he has served on the board of trustees for Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine. Stiller has also been an active member of the American Law Institute for 40 years and is the only Maryland lawyer ever elected to be a fellow of both the American College of Tax Counsel and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
