Andrew Schatz’s practice focuses on environmental counseling, regulatory compliance, permitting and transactional due diligence. He counsels clients on compliance with the Clean Air and Water Acts, and applicable state regulations, particularly in the electric utility sector. Mr. Schatz’s experience includes energy and environmental-related litigation and assisting electric generators and utilities obtain Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity before the state public service commission.

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Mr. Schatz served as a law clerk with the Office of Legal Adviser for the US Department of State, where he helped litigate before the US-Iran Claims Tribunal and defend the agency against international tort claims. He also has experience at the state and federal legislatures, drafting hybrid electric vehicle legislation in the Maryland House of Delegates and serving as a legislative fellow for Congressman Eliot Engel, where he assisted the Congressman with greenhouse gas registry legislation and the 2007 Energy Bill. He has authored several publications on climate change.

Mr. Schatz graduated from Georgetown University Law Center, cum laude, where he served as Executive Editor of the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review’s 20th Anniversary Focus Issue, Beyond Kyoto – The Developing World and Climate Change. Mr. Schatz received his B.S. in Policy Analysis & Management with a minor in Environmental & Resource Economics at Cornell University.
