John Dienelt is a litigator with 30 years of trial and appellate experience, particularly in franchising, antitrust, intellectual property, and other commercial cases. Mr. Dienelt has concentrated on complex and enterprise-threatening litigation, including class actions. He has also represented private parties in disputes with the federal government before courts and administrative agencies.
Mr. Dienelt has tried, or handled arbitrations in, more than 75 cases and has argued more than 25 appeals in various federal and state courts and the United States Supreme Court. The author of numerous articles, he is a regular speaker at programs on franchising and teaches franchise law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and at the University of Virginia Law School. He has also taught in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy program at Georgetown.
He has served as a member of the Governing Committee of the ABA Forum on Franchising and was its chairman from 1999 to 2001. He has also served on the steering committee of the National Franchise Mediation Program, has been appointed as a mediator for the Federal and District of Columbia court systems, and is an arbitrator and mediator for franchise and distribution disputes for the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution. The DC Lawyers’ Committee For Civil Rights has recognized him for his pro bono activities.
Before entering private practice Mr. Dienelt served as assistant to the Solicitor General in the United States Department of Justice and as Washington counsel for the Environmental Defense Fund.
Mr. Dienelt is listed in An International Who's Who of Franchise Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America 2003-2004 (10th Edition), and the 2005 Who's Who Legal: The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers. He was also named in Franchise Times’ “Legal Eagles,” as one of the top 101 franchise lawyers in the US and Canada. The respected English publisher Chambers & Partners names him in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. In 2007, citing his "smart, measured approach," Chambers described him as “enormously experienced and effective in a courtroom,” and in 2008 it called him “an outstanding litigator.”
