Joe Christian is a partner in the Real Estate Practice group based in DLA Piper’s Hong Kong office.

Mr. Christian has dealt extensively with the acquisition, management, and disposition of real estate assets in all of the major markets across the United States and overseas, representing real estate advisors, operating companies, tax-qualified and public pension and profit-sharing plans, financial institutions, real estate investment trusts, and individuals. In addition, since 2001, Mr. Christian has represented a US property company in its acquisition and financing of a 1,400-acre master planned new city in Incheon, South Korea.

He comes to DLA Piper from WilmerHale, where he had been a partner in the real estate group since 1994 and chair of WilmerHale’s real estate capital management group. Before that, Mr. Christian was a senior executive and counsel at one of the country's largest real estate investment advisory firms. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Christian worked as an urban planner at the New York City Planning Commission.

Mr. Christian's areas of legal experience include real estate joint ventures, equity and debt financings, real estate and land-use law, environmental law, insurance company separate accounts, taxation of tax-exempt entities, and rules governing real estate investment trusts. He is also experienced in legal affairs relating to the management of portfolios of real estate, such as ERISA requirements and general fiduciary matters.

He is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association (PREA) and the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE).

Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business has listed him in every edition since 2005. He is also named in The Best Lawyers in America and as a New England Super Lawyer. Martindale-Hubbell rates him AV, its highest rating available.
