Lewis G. Rudnick is senior counsel in the Chicago office of DLA Piper LLP (US). He is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and Northwestern University School of Law.
Mr. Rudnick practices franchising law; consults with companies considering franchising as a method of business expansion; assists companies to develop domestic and international franchising networks, structure and document franchise relationships, comply with disclosure and franchise relationship regulation, and resolve a wide variety of legal and business matters that arise in franchise networks, including restructuring of franchise relationships to resolve franchise network problems and position franchisors for expansion; and acts as an expert witness in franchise litigation and arbitration matters.
He also practices in the field of residential mortgage lending regulation. This practice area includes advising clients with respect to various federal statutes (Truth In Lending Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act) and state laws that regulate mortgage lenders.
Mr. Rudnick was formerly general counsel to the International Franchise Association and the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation and participated in the development of the franchising research projects and educational programs sponsored by the Association and the Foundation, including the development of the Profile of Franchising. Mr. Rudnick received the 2004 William Rosenberg Leadership Award from the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation.
He was a member of the Governing Committee of the American Bar Association Forum on Franchising from its establishment in 1977 until 1984, served as chairman of the Forum from 1981 to 1983, and guided the Forum in establishing its journal. He has been a member of the Illinois Franchise Advisory Board and the Industry Advisory Committee to the Franchising Regulation Committee of the North American Securities Administrators Association. Mr. Rudnick was a principal author of the original Uniform Franchise Offering Circular Rules and Guidelines.
Mr. Rudnick is an editor of the Journal of International Franchising and Distribution Law; co-authored Franchising: A Business and Compliance Guide, published by CCH; and a co-author of Negotiating an International Master Franchise Agreement, published by Sweet & Maxwell. He has authored and edited numerous papers, monographs, and articles on franchising law and has been a frequent speaker on the topic of domestic and international franchising and distribution law.
Mr. Rudnick has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer, the result of research projects conducted jointly by Law & Politics and Chicago magazines.
