Nick Valentine leads DLA Piper's Technology and Data team in New Zealand. He advises public and private sector organisations on complex technology transactions, including digital transformation, AI adoption, strategic sourcing, cloud and software arrangements, and technology development and licensing.

Nick also advises on data protection, cybersecurity, telecommunications and technology regulation, and the governance and operational risks arising from emerging technologies. His work includes major technology procurement and transformation projects, AI-enabled solutions and data-intensive projects across regulated sectors.

Clients value his commercial approach, technical understanding and ability to simplify complex issues while keeping sight of the broader objectives of a project.

  • Advised FMG Insurance on a digital transformation project involving the migration of its core insurance IT platform to a cloud solution provided by Guidewire Software, Inc.
  • Advised various developers, suppliers, and customers of AI-enabled solutions in the health sector.
  • Advised a New Zealand insurer on the procurement and implementation of a new cloud-based claims management system from an insurance SaaS provider.
  • Advised a foreign government on all aspects of New Zealand privacy, cybersecurity, and surveillance/intelligence law.
