DLA Piper receives Latin Lawyer Deal of the Year awards

DLA Piper is pleased to announce that the firm received two Deal of the Year awards from Latin Lawyer. The firm was recognized for its representation of lender Oaktree Capital Management in LATAM Airlines’ US$2.45 billion debtor-in-possession loan and for its representation of Uber and Chilean grocery delivery start-up Cornershop in Uber’s US$459 million acquisition of Cornershop.

Uber’s acquisition of Cornershop received the publication’s private M&A Deal of the Year award. According to Latin Lawyer, the acquisition “faced regulatory challenges in Chile and Mexico,” and the “substantial price tag for a controlling stake in a Latin American start-up” made the deal stand out. DLA Piper Chile assisted both Uber and Cornershop with antitrust matters, as well as with tax and corporate aspects under Chilean law.

The LATAM Airlines transaction received Latin Lawyer’s banking and finance Deal of the Year award. Due to financial strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020 and later obtained US$2.45 billion debtor-in-possession financing from a group of international shareholders, creditors and lenders. DLA Piper represented Oaktree Capital Management, which agreed to lend US$1.125 billion to LATAM Airlines. The transaction included DLA Piper Chile, DLA Piper Perú and DLA Piper Martínez Beltrán in Colombia.
