Karla Cure focuses her practice in the area of US international trade, including customs laws, US trade remedies, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), export controls, economic sanctions, and related areas of national security and international trade laws.

Karla has particular experience in import compliance matters such as US Harmonized Tariff Schedule classification, non-preferential country of origin determinations, preferential duty treatment under various free trade agreements and programs, forced labor laws and customs valuation.

In the trade remedies area, Karla has experience in antidumping and countervailing duty investigations before the US Department of Commerce, the US International Trade Commission, the Enforce and Protect Act investigations before US Customs and Border Protection and litigation before the US Court of International Trade.

Karla’s experience also includes advising clients on national security risks posed by foreign investment and assisting clients in seeking CFIUS approval. In addition, Karla helps clients with compliance, licensing and enforcement matters related to export controls and economic sanctions laws and regulations administered by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), and the US State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).

Before joining DLA Piper, Karla practiced at a boutique law firm in Washington DC, focusing on trade relief actions and customs matters. In addition, Karla practiced law in Colombia, where she assisted Colombian and foreign companies in ensuring compliance with Colombian customs laws, including country of origin issues, customs valuation, free trade zones, among other matters. Karla also represented numerous clients in trade relief investigations before the Colombian authority.
