DLA Piper’s Real Estate practice named a Law360 2020 Practice Group of the Year
DLA Piper is pleased to announce that Law360 has named the firm’s Real Estate practice a Practice Group of the Year for 2020.
Law360 highlighted the large size of DLA Piper’s real estate practice – which includes about 200 US-based real estate lawyers and 500 globally – as well as the broad range of work the group handles, “taking up deals that span buying, selling, leasing and ground-up development issues such as obtaining government approvals.”
The publication also cited a number of the large, high-profile matters handled by the group. This year, DLA Piper’s real estate team handled major transactions such as Ventas Inc.'s approximately US$1 billion acquisition and financing of a three-building life sciences portfolio in California, served as lead counsel for Oxford Properties Group in the acquisition and financing of a 1.3-million square-foot building for Google in New York, and served as lead counsel to Transform in a number of large transactions, including a US$800 million loan secured by 160 properties in 36 states, a US$250 million loan secured by 83 properties in 27 states, and a US$1 billion transaction that involved 130 properties across the US and in Puerto Rico.
John Sullivan, US chair and global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Real Estate practice, told Law360 that “because real estate has always been so important at DLA and such a high-priority practice group for us, it’s made a big difference in terms of our ability over the last 10 or so years to attract some of the biggest and most active real estate clients and do a lot of the biggest and, we think, most interesting deals.” Sullivan also noted that “one of the things we're really known for is being able to handle transactions that handle lots of properties in lots of different places. We can very quickly assemble teams of lawyers who are used to working together all around the country or all around the world.”
