Peter Shelford is admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales (1975) and Hong Kong (1996). Based in London from 1975 to 1996, then in Hong Kong from 1996 to 2001, he joined DLA Piper Singapore as a partner in May 2001. His principal areas of practice are commercial litigation and arbitration with an emphasis on insurance, reinsurance and construction. He also advises the insurance industry generally on investment into Thailand and on various insurance regulatory issues.

He is a member of the Law Society of England & Wales and the Maritime Law Association, Singapore, a fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the regional panel of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, a panel member of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration, a panel member of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, and a panel member of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. He is currently accepting appointments as an arbitrator and has delivered numerous Awards. He has acted as both a sole arbitrator and as a member of a three man panel.

Peter has been involved in various other litigation matters, including construction, product liability, banking, personal injury, shareholder disputes and defamation. He has substantial experience of English, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thai arbitration procedures and is particularly experienced with LMAA, ICC, SIAC and TAI arbitrations.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advising a major Korean construction company in relation to piling problems at an office building in Singapore. The dispute was subject to arbitration in Singapore
  • Advising insurers and reinsurers in relation to a substantial dispute arising from construction of a power plant in Thailand
  • Advising construction liability insurers of a major French power company in relation to issues arising from a black out during construction work of a power plant in Thailand
  • Advising insurers and reinsurers under a CAR policy in relation to a major fire which occurred during construction of the Thai Airways catering building at the new Airport in Bangkok
  • Advising manufacturers and their insurers in relation to a product liability claim arising from the crash of a passenger aircraft in Thailand, killing all on board
  • Advising designers of the runway and aprons at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in relation to an arbitration claim for approx US$ 100million
  • Advising owners and insurers of the "HYUNDAI 105" which sank following a collision in the Singapore Straits in June 2004, with the loss of 4,191 cars, including dealing with wreck removal issues. Claim amount exceeded US$ 140million
  • Advising Thai insurance market in relation to various hotel Tsunami claims, including handling the claims through to arbitration in Thailand, and acting as Counsel in those arbitrations
  • Advising the Asian reinsurance market in relation to an explosion and fire at a power plant in Thailand, the claim amount exceeding US$ 70million

    Insight Overview

    Peter has written papers and articles in a number of business magazines such as ALB and Director. He also delivered talks at seminars on a wide variety of topics in the UK, Korea, Canada, the USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, and is regularly invited by Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) to be a guest speaker at seminars in Asia on various shipping related issues.
