Venus is a data and technology lawyer who focuses on data protection, technology transactions, IT regulatory, and general commercial issues. She specialises in complex commercial and technology outsourcing, and data protection matters and assists international businesses around day-to-day data protection compliance, IT operations, procurement and supplier due diligence as well as support navigating the complex data and IT regulatory frameworks under the China and other APAC jurisdictions.

She has advised clients across multiple sectors particularly within the technology, consumer, automotive, lifescience, and hospitality industries.

Venus regularly assists clients in devising and designing IT infrastructure and data compliance programs with a commercial approach. She has an ability to make the complex simple and understands the strategic objectives of a deal.

Venus also has experience in advising IT and telecom companies throughout APAC, on a spectrum of matters including software development, product licensing and regulatory compliance on network and connectivity products, arrangements to roll out new technologies, cloud computing and data center services, and value-added telecommunication services licenses.

EXPERIENCE

Data Protection and Cybersecurity:

  • Advising a major US technology, software and services company on its APAC privacy and marketing programme, serving as the strategic partner to the company and the ‘go to’ legal counsel for APAC data privacy, marketing, data residency, data centre and data localization matters.
  • Advising a range of companies within the hospitality industry on all aspects of information collection and handling processes, policies implementation and supporting their approach to compliance with cybersecurity and privacy laws and associated regulations in Asia, including filings to authorities.
  • Advising a number of global automotive company on data lake projects, devising and designing data protection compliance program and providing strategic advice on the data protection regulatory environment in APAC. Acting as their extended legal function to support on project implementation, app publishing and other daily operation matters.
  • Conducted one of the world's largest reviews of data protection laws covering a multinational bank's operations in 65 jurisdictions across the world including Asia, Middle East and Latin America. The review was used to form part of a privacy requirements statement integrated into the bank's compliance and audit methodology.
  • Advising a wide range of multinational companies on day-to-day privacy, cybersecurity, employee monitoring, (gaming) app compliance, e-commerce, and China MLPS matters. Providing practical commercial solutions and data strategic advice for operation teams in light of the client’s business ambitions.
  • Advising a number of insurance companies on all aspects of information collection and handling processes and its approach to compliance with the new cybersecurity and privacy laws and associated regulations in Asia.

Commercial, Technology and Sourcing:

  • Advising a large SaaS company on the commercial and regulatory aspects of its establishment of a long-term partnering arrangement with a major Chinese technology and cloud service provider to provide an in China hosted instance of its CRM solutions suite.Ranging from deal structuring to all the related regulatory and commercial issues surrounding data residency, data center operations and regulatory licenses, data localization requirements and the scope of other requisite value-added telecoms licenses required to operate an in country hosted solution.
  • Advising a tech giant internet technology company as their go-to legal counsel, and supporting them as an extended member to their commercial contracting team on a broad spectrum of global technology implementation initiatives covering their TMT, CDN and SMS businesses.
  • Advising a leading manufacturer of optical and digital precision technology products on their first-generation outsourcing and operations.
  • Advising a number of multinational software and professional services company in negotiations and advising on service agreements for the provision of software and services.
  • Advising a US clinical technology software company to devise optimal corporate and operations structure and setting up a strategic joint venture alliance for their Asia market expansion, assisting in reviewing and negotiating a range of commercial agreements.
  • Advising a number of SaaS solution company on infrastructure onshoring and associated alternate collaboration models to support content delivery and hosting solutions to corporate customers in mainland China (which included strategic advice on telco licensing requirements in China).
