Derek Gretkowski focuses his practice on complex intellectual property litigation spanning a range of technologies, including pharmaceuticals, life sciences, materials science, consumer electronics, and software. His experience includes all phases of patent litigation, from developing infringement and validity analyses and managing discovery to drafting pleadings and pre-trial motions.

Derek splits his time between Philadelphia and Delaware and remains closely connected to the Delaware patent litigation practice. Through his experience representing clients in the District of Delaware, he has developed an in-depth knowledge of the court's judges and procedures.

  • District of Delaware: Currently representing a major consumer products company in a patent dispute directed to power control technology in baseband chips
  • Hutchinson Technology v. Suncall – District of Minnesota: Represented Hutchinson in a dispute over 18 patents generally directed to hard disk drive technology
  • One World Technologies v. Chervon – District of Delaware: Represented outdoor power equipment manufacturer Chervon in a multi-patent suit generally directed to lawnmower handle technology

Pro Bono

Derek has an active pro bono practice including representing clients in asylum petitions and civil rights litigation. Derek is currently representing inmates in a prison civil rights matter pending in the District of Delaware.

Clerk Experience

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Derek was a law clerk for the Honorable Gregory B. Williams in the District of Delaware as well as a student law clerk to the Honorable Christopher Burke. During Derek's clerkship, he was the lead clerk on five patent trials where he gained valuable knowledge about Delaware patent practices, procedures, and preferences.
