Philipp Schmechel advises national and international clients of various industries in data protection and cybersecurity law.

He focuses on a wide range of topics such as employee data protection, compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) including transparency requirements as well as international transfers. He also advises on the handling of complex data subject requests and personal data breaches.

Philipp regularly carries out due diligences for corporate transactions with respect to data protection law.

He uses his expertise to advise on big data and AI projects, customer data and cloud computing solutions as well as implementing new business models.

  • Conducting a data protection audit at a start-up and advising on its data protection compliance.
  • Advising companies on the defense of claims for damages under GDPR (data privacy litigation).
  • Coordinating a complex data subject access request of an ex-employee for an international enterprise with use of a legal tech tool. 
  • Advising a global waste management company on its implementation of a telematics and GPS tracking system.
  • Advising exceet on the business combination with APEX Group, a pioneer in green hydrogen plants.
  • Advising Capvis on the acquisition of a majority stake in Schurter Group.
  • Advising the DAX-listed company Heidelberg Materials on the acquisition of the SER Group.

Prior Experience

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Philipp gained years of practical experience in the fields of data protection law, IT law, and copyright law.

During his legal traineeship, he worked in two leading international law firms in Hamburg focusing on data protection law as well as in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin on platform, digital services, and media industries regulation.

Before that, Philipp was a research assistant at the Institute of Business Law and Media Law at the Chair of Prof. Spindler, University of Göttingen, where Philipp is a PhD candidate on ‘Big Data and the GDPR’.

For several years, Philipp acted as Technical Editor of the international open access law journal JIPITEC (Journal of Intellectual Property, Information Technology and E-Commerce Law).
