Smart Buildings: Legal aspects of connected constructions

What will buildings of the future look like?

Smart buildings connect multiple building systems that automatically and autonomously respond to situations and events concerning the buildings and are part of the IoT (internet of things) evolution. Occupants of smart buildings as well are integrated into this dynamic, self-contained ecosystem based on devices that capture, store and analyse data for the eventual comfort of the occupiers, efficient maintenance of the buildings and reduction of environmental impact.

Start-ups in Belgium and abroad have begun offering innovative market-ready products that can be implemented in smart building projects. Integrating technologies in construction plans to create truly connected and data-driven buildings also introduces new legal challenges.

This report explores the real business opportunities and challenges this transformation presents to the construction industry discussing the legal challenges such as data protection, cybersecurity, contracting and property law.
