All of our Flexible Lawyers are provided by Lawyers on Demand (LOD). As an LOD lawyer you can choose to be either flexibly employed or a freelance consultant.

When will I hear about potential assignments?

The level of demand can be difficult to predict, however LOD will be able to provide guidance on expected workflows for your experience level and expertise. Once you have completed the on boarding process, LOD will notify you of any relevant opportunities that come in. By partnering with LOD to deliver this service, you have the added benefit of considering assignments with LOD's other clients as well as DLA Piper. It's then it's up to you to decide whether you want to engage in that project. If you're interested and timelines work, you could find yourself starting within a few days.

Will I be working for DLA Piper or LOD?

You will contract with LOD for any relevant assignment - whether it be for DLA Piper or another LOD client directly.

Once placed on a project you will have multiple levels of support. LOD's Lawyer Care and Development team are a consistent point of contact for you during all assignments. If you are engaged on a DLA Piper matter or working with our clients on a secondment basis, we ensure that you are on-boarded as a temporary member of the team with a dedicated Partner supervisor and all the team and knowledge support you need.

What are the working patterns like?

We will take note of your preferred working hours and location and approach you with opportunities that fit in with your needs. Working avenues will either be specified by the client, or negotiated to suit your working style. This might be full time at a client, on site at DLA Piper, part time, or working remotely from home. Every engagement is different and the more flexible you are on working patterns, the greater opportunities there will likely be.

There are typically two main ways of working:

  • LOD's On Site model: This is similar to a secondment or interim position. You work as part of DLA Piper / the client's team for designated days each week, usually at an office base.
  • LOD's On Call model: This is designed to give more flexibility around when and where you work. You work remotely for DLA Piper / our clients or for specific projects. A minimum amount of hours per month is agreed to suit the specific resourcing need.

What if I come across an issue during my assignment?

DLA Piper and LOD work together to ensure both client and lawyer are satisfied throughout the entirety of their new working relationship, with regular check-ins playing a key part in our process. Any issues that could potentially arise will be addressed and rectified immediately to ensure the journey is a fulfilling one, as it should be.
