John is an experienced international trade practitioner, specialising in export controls, sanctions and international trade law. He has advised international governments and commerce on international trade issues. Formerly John was advisor to the UK Government on trade and investment policy and has represented the UK in the EU, the WTO, the OECD and the United Nations. He has directly advised a number of foreign Governments on various aspects of their trade and investment policy and negotiations with the European Union. This experience has given John an expert knowledge of the legal and regulatory implications and also the opportunities provided by Brexit.

John regularly counsels clients on the handling and coordination of multijurisdictional investigations involving alleged violations of international sanctions, export controls and customs regulations. He works with clients to assess their compliance risk profile and develop and implement fit for purpose policies and procedures for the identification and management of risk associated with cross-border activity, including: trade financing, import and export activity, investment transactions and enhanced counter-party screening and due diligence.
