Richard Obank practices in the area of corporate restructuring with particular expertise advising boards of directors in financially distressed situations. He advises regularly on distressed M&A transactions, debt and capital restructuring and work out situations where the objective is to ensure the best outcome for stakeholders and avoid a damaging insolvency process.

Richard has a track record of advising on company voluntary arrangements built up over his career and has worked on a number of high profile mandates in the retail, construction and football sectors.

Richard acts for corporates, public and private, private equity investors and financial institutions whether or not the mandate is buy-side or sell-side or more focussed on restructuring the balance sheet of portfolio companies prior to an exit.

Richard acts regularly for turnaround professionals and accountants operating in the restructuring arena. Richard has extensive experience acting for liquidators on solvent liquidations and re-organisations.

Richard is recognised as a veteran UK practitioner with a diverse portfolio of national and international clients. He is ranked as a leading individual in Legal 500 and Chambers “acting on major, high value restructurings often with significant cross-border elements”.

Richard has over 30 years of experience as a solicitor having spent 9 years in London (1991-2000) where he became a partner with Herbert Smith in 1996. Richard joined DLA Piper in June 2000 and has been the Location Head of Restructuring in Leeds since 1 May 2014.

Richard has particular sector expertise in retail, manufacturing, mining and minerals, oil and gas, hotel and leisure and professional football clubs.

Richard has “hands-on” experience as a board director and charity trustee and been responsible in that capacity for implementing the largest debt restructuring in the independent school sector.

Richard was a DLA Piper Pro Bono Responsible Business Award winner in 2015 for his work with The Royal Foundation in 2015 in the area of international wildlife conservation and has presented at a number of international wildlife summits and conferences.
