As the UK transitions to net zero, an increasing proportion of the energy generation mix will be from intermittent renewables, resulting in a growing system need for flexibility and energy storage. At present, UK electricity storage is dominated by batteries and pumped hydropower. Looking to the future, questions remain over the potential role of coupling renewable generation with storage, promoting the growth of long duration energy storage, and the potential impacts of REMA on UK flexibility.
This event, and the accompanying report written by Cornwall Insight in partnership with DLA Piper, explores these questions alongside a discussion of the main revenue streams, routes to market, and challenges for electricity storage assets in the UK, with case studies included from the Australian and Irish markets.
