Matthew Matule joins DLA Piper’s Litigation and Regulatory practice in Boston

DLA Piper announced today that Matthew Matule has joined the firm’s Litigation and Regulatory practice as a partner in Boston.

Matule joins DLA Piper after five years in Amsterdam, where he served as deputy general counsel for disputes, investigations and policy with VEON, Ltd., a NASDAQ-listed global telecommunications provider operating in Europe, Asia and Africa. As a key member of the VEON legal team, Matule led the strategic execution of the VEON group’s most material disputes and international arbitrations while separately overseeing the internal investigation team handling those sensitive investigations conducted as part of the company’s FCPA resolution with the US authorities.

Prior to his role with VEON, he spent 20 years in private practice at another premiere international firm representing corporations, partnerships, C-suite executives and boards/special committees, and individuals across a wide range of industries in disputes, government investigations and regulatory matters. Matule also has considerable experience advising boards on sanctions, anti-corruption and anti-money laundering, as well as overseeing material internal investigations.

“Matt brings a notable breadth of significant experience and an impressive track record of successfully handling complex securities and commercial litigation matters in areas that require a high degree of sophistication,” said Stefanie Fogel, co-chair of DLA Piper’s Boston Litigation practice. “His experience litigating matters across a broad range of sectors, including financial services, life sciences, insurance, tech, and media and entertainment, makes him a strong addition to our practice.”

“Matt’s background as both an accomplished trial lawyer and deputy general counsel of a major multinational company is rare in the marketplace and a tremendous benefit to our firm. We know that our clients will value Matt’s counsel and rely on him for many of their most complex regulatory challenges and disputes,” said Loren Brown, DLA Piper’s US vice chair - disputes.

“Matt is a creative problem solver with decades of experience who has both the knowledge and skills to help clients move their business objectives forward while facing regulatory and other significant challenges,” added John Rattigan, managing partner of the firm’s Boston office. “His capabilities will be an important addition to our team in Boston and across our global platform.”

Matule is the latest addition to the firm's Litigation and Regulatory practice, which has recently welcomed senior policy advisor Jim Greenwood in Washington, DC, and partners John Gibson in Los Angeles, Donna Thiel and Daniel Garen in Washington, DC, John Phillips in San Francisco and Ronald Brown in Wilmington.

Matule received his J.D. from Vermont Law School and his B.S. from Boston College.
