Australia pursues multinational tax avoidance

Tax Update

Australia has introduced legislation dealing with several initiatives to combat multinational tax avoidance. These include new anti-avoidance rules relating to selling goods and services to Australian customers, doubling penalties in certain situations and increased reporting obligations.

The new rules mainly affect large multinational entities who have Australian customers (but also impact large Australian businesses). It is anticipated that a number of multinational groups will need to restructure their operations, as they pertain to Australia, to comply with the new rules and avoid penalties.
